The journey of Coyote vs. Acme has been anything but smooth. Originally slated for release by Warner Bros., the film, which blends live-action with classic Looney Tunes animation, found itself on the chopping block in November 2023. Warner Bros. famously opted to cancel the nearly completed project for a tax write-off, a move that drew widespread condemnation and comparisons to the similarly shelved Batgirl movie.

However, unlike Batgirl, Coyote vs. Acme received a miraculous reprieve. Another distributor stepped in, ensuring the film's survival and eventually bringing it to U.S. cinemas on August 28, 2026. The film, which sees Wile E. Coyote suing the ACME Corporation with the help of an attorney (played by Will Forte), earned positive critical reviews, though its box office performance was modest, grossing $88 million worldwide against a reported budget of at least $70 million.

For French fans, however, the path to seeing the film is proving less straightforward. Paramount+ has acquired the rights for France, but the release will be strictly streaming-only, bypassing multiplexes entirely. This decision alone marks a significant downgrade from its U.S. theatrical run. Adding to the disappointment, a recent report from Ecran Large, referencing an interview with Daniel Cohen, artistic director of the Festival Européen du Film Fantastique de Strasbourg (FEFFS), reveals an even more peculiar detail.

The film was presented as the opening feature at FEFFS, offering a rare big-screen experience for French viewers. Cohen disclosed to CNC (Centre National du Cinéma et de l'Image Animée) that while Paramount+ plans to offer both the original English version and a French dub, it will not include French subtitles for the original English track. "Paramount+ will broadcast it in original version without subtitles and dubbed in French, but has not planned subtitles: we therefore called on translators for its presentation in Strasbourg in VOST," Cohen stated, highlighting the unusual oversight.

This decision means that non-English speaking French audiences will be limited to the dubbed version, sacrificing the original performances of actors like Will Forte and John Cena. It's a surprising move for a major streaming platform and suggests a lack of attention to detail for the film's French debut. While Looney Tunes may not hold the same cultural weight in Europe as in the United States, the absence of basic subtitle options for an anticipated film underscores the continued challenges Coyote vs. Acme faces in finding its audience internationally. A specific French release date on Paramount+ has yet to be announced.
