For years, Gromit’s furrowed brow, knowing glances, and perfectly timed eye-rolls have communicated more than words ever could, making him one of animation's most endearing and intelligent mute characters. His upcoming autobiography, penned by co-creator Nick Park, aims to finally give voice to these unspoken observations, and the choice of narrator for the audiobook has been a point of particular interest.
Nick Park, the four-time Oscar winner behind the "Wallace & Gromit" universe, acknowledged the unique challenge of casting a voice for a character whose silence is his hallmark. "When you create a character who has no voice, and whose facial expressions are everything, what do you do when your publisher reminds you there’ll be an audiobook?" Park mused, as reported by Variety. The solution, he quickly realized, lay with an actor renowned for his nuanced portrayals and understated wit.
"The more I thought about it, the more I realised Martin Freeman was the obvious choice really," Park stated, adding, "I was genuinely thrilled and honoured when he said yes." Freeman, known for his roles in "The Office," "Sherlock," and "The Hobbit" trilogy, brings a distinctive blend of dry humour and thoughtful delivery that seems perfectly suited to Gromit's sophisticated, often exasperated, personality.
However, fans expecting to hear Freeman literally "do a Gromit voice" should adjust their expectations. Park clarified that Freeman’s role is not to invent a vocalization for the plasticine pup, but rather to articulate Gromit's internal monologue. "Martin is not doing a Gromit ‘voice’ as such," Park explained. Instead, Freeman will be "reading Gromit’s story as Gromit put it; his inner thoughts, his candid insights and endless witticisms," bringing his own signature "colour, thoughtfulness and wry humour" to the narration.
This approach maintains the integrity of Gromit’s silent persona while allowing for a rich exploration of his perspective on life with the eccentric inventor Wallace. The audiobook, alongside the physical book, is scheduled for release on October 22. Recording sessions for the highly anticipated project took place earlier this month at Penguin Studios, setting the stage for what promises to be a delightful and insightful journey into the mind of one of animation's most beloved, and now, vocally interpreted, characters.
