While the domestic box office is projected for a record post-COVID year, potentially reaching $10 billion, the reality for small and mid-sized independent features remains complex. The massive success of Obsession is largely seen as an anomaly, and indie films face an uphill battle for sustained theatrical runs and awards recognition. The streaming era, coupled with the closure of many independent cinemas, has made moviegoers more selective about what merits their time and money outside the home.

Exhibitors, too, have less patience, often not granting indie films the two-week, full-schedule runs needed for word-of-mouth to build. Only powerful arthouse distributors like A24, Neon, Focus Features, or Searchlight can typically secure such commitments, as seen with A24's Sundance pickup The Invite, which grossed over $55 million worldwide. Many indie pictures are relegated to split schedules, and screens are quickly pulled if a film isn't hitting $3,000-$4,000 per screen on a weekend.
This year's TIFF sees a notable shift in primetime slots at major venues like Roy Thomson Hall. Unlike previous years, which often featured major studio and streamer awards contenders (e.g., The Martian, Roma, Green Book, The Joker), these slots are now largely occupied by independent sales titles. Exceptions include Apple's opening night film Being Heumann starring Cynthia Erivo, and Amazon MGM Studios' I Play Rocky from Green Book director Peter Farrelly.

While the dream of an acquisition leading to a rapid awards season push remains potent – as it did for The Wrestler, Still Alice, and I, Tonya – it's a difficult path. Recent examples like Black Bear's Christy (less than $2 million domestic) and Searchlight's The Testament of Ann Lee ($2.5 million domestic), which failed to gain awards traction, temper expectations. However, the new TIFF market, running through September 16, aims to alleviate some pressure. It allows for projects to be financed in time for early Q1 production, shifting AFM's role to contract closures. This structure also means sellers aren't rushed to release films into awards season, nor do they need to fear sour reviews derailing auctions.
This year's market also sees Black Bear looking to acquire finished projects, Sumerian Pictures seeking new endeavors after Josephine, and Warner Bros.' genre label Clockwork targeting films that can hit $15M-$20M domestically. Paramount+ and Peacock are also stepping in as potential pay-one providers, partnering with theatrical distributors, a role often monopolized by Hulu in the past. One minor drawback noted by some sellers is a reduced Press & Industry screening schedule, though some see this as potentially driving buyers to public screenings.
