Jamie Dornan is preparing to wield Strider's sword as the new Aragorn in Warner Bros.' highly anticipated project, "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum." The casting of Dornan in a role so synonymous with Viggo Mortensen has naturally sparked considerable discussion among fans. In a recent interview with L'Officiel, Dornan acknowledged the weight of expectation.
"There's pressure when you're trying to follow in those footsteps. I'll do my best," Dornan stated, conveying his understanding of the challenge. He further emphasized his deep respect for Mortensen's original portrayal: "Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favorites." Dornan clarified his intention, adding, "There's no part of me that's trying to outdo him."
The decision to recast Aragorn comes as the new film, directed by Andy Serkis, aims to tell a fresh story set within the timeline of "The Fellowship of the Ring," focusing on the attempts to capture Gollum. While original cast members like Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are set to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Frodo, respectively, the filmmakers opted for a younger actor for Aragorn rather than de-aging Mortensen. Serkis has reportedly confirmed that Mortensen has given his blessing to Dornan's casting.
Peter Jackson, who helmed the original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is involved with "The Hunt for Gollum" as a writer and producer. Co-star Leo Woodall, who plays Halvard in the movie, has already expressed confidence in Dornan, remarking, "I can say that, now, my Aragorn is Jamie Dornan."
"The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is slated to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027, marking a significant return to Tolkien's world with a new interpretation of a legendary character.
