Marvel Studios is rolling out the latest promotional material for Avengers: Doomsday, and the message is clear: Doctor Doom is the star. Unlike previous Avengers sagas, where the heroes dominated the marketing, these new posters put the masked antagonist front and center, a move highlighted by French film site Ecranlarge.com.

This promotional pivot comes after reports in June 2024 from Variety indicated massive financial commitments to bring back key talent for Doomsday and its sequel, Secret Wars. Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind Infinity War and Endgame, are reportedly receiving around $80 million for their directorial duties. Even more significantly, Robert Downey Jr., who famously portrayed Iron Man for over a decade, is said to be earning "much more" than that to embody the formidable Doctor Doom. This colossal investment includes lucrative box office bonuses, reminiscent of the deals that saw Downey Jr.'s total earnings for his Iron Man tenure soar to an estimated $500-600 million.

Historically, Marvel's approach to villain promotion has been starkly different. For Avengers: Infinity War, the campaign was a celebration of its vast superhero roster, with individual character posters and group shots featuring the heroes prominently. Thanos, despite being the overarching threat, was largely absent from solo promotional art, only appearing centrally on the final ensemble posters. Endgame followed a similar pattern, with posters emphasizing either the surviving heroes or those lost in the snap. The strategy was always to showcase the heroes, not the villain.

Avengers: Doomsday flips this script entirely. A multitude of new posters feature Doctor Doom in various poses – seated, standing, in profile, and even looming over the assembled Avengers. These include dedicated posters for Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, a clear indication of Marvel's intent to maximize box office returns through premium ticket sales. The heavy emphasis on Doctor Doom has led Ecranlarge.com to describe the film's overall promotional efforts to date as "minimum service" and "insipid," with the posters being the most compelling element.

One intriguing aspect of this strategy is that Robert Downey Jr.'s face remains hidden behind Doctor Doom's iconic mask. This raises the question of whether the general audience, unaware of Downey Jr.'s return in this new role, will simply see an imposing figure in armor rather than recognize the star power behind it. Is Marvel banking solely on the strength of the 'Avengers' brand to draw audiences, or are they perhaps overestimating the public's awareness of Downey Jr.'s involvement in a masked role?

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be a financial behemoth, with pre-sales reportedly hitting $50 million three months before its release. However, the true test will be its final box office tally. Will it match the $2 billion of Infinity War or the staggering $2.7 billion of Endgame? Or might it fall short of 2026's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which garnered $2.5 billion? With a rumored budget of $400 million, excluding promotional costs (surpassing Endgame's $365 million and Infinity War's $325 million), the stakes are incredibly high.

Audiences will get their first answers when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 16th. With promotional activities expected to intensify, it remains to be seen if the marketing campaign can shift from its current 'Doom-centric' focus to a more varied and engaging approach.
