Chinese director Wen Muye is celebrating another box office triumph with his latest film, 'Once Upon a Time in the Middle East,' which has earned a staggering RMB2.29 billion ($342 million) in China. This makes it one of the highest-grossing Chinese films of 2023, following his previous hits 'Dying to Survive' and 'Nice View.' The film's success stems from Muye's distinctive storytelling, which places an ordinary individual at the heart of an extraordinary crisis.

'Once Upon a Time in the Middle East' centers on Xu Fu, a cook from Shenyang played by Chinese superstar Shen Teng, who travels to the Middle East for a head-chef position to pay off family debts. When war erupts, his pursuit of financial stability transforms into a struggle for survival. Director Wen Muye, in an interview with Variety, emphasized his deliberate choice to focus on the human element amidst the chaos.

"Although the backdrop may seem very large, for a specific little person – an ordinary person – this is a very concrete predicament that he has to face," Wen Muye told Variety. This philosophy guides the narrative, ensuring the audience connects with Xu Fu's personal journey rather than the broader political landscape.

The inspiration for the film came from news reports and the real-life experiences of Chinese cooks working in the region. Wen Muye and his team conducted extensive interviews with various individuals, including chefs, workers, and locals who lived through conflict, to ground the story in authenticity. This meticulous research allowed the director to craft a narrative that feels both intimate and expansive.

Casting Shen Teng, primarily known for his comedic roles, was a strategic decision. While Shen Teng's comedic talent adds a certain lightness to the film's heavier themes, Wen Muye stated that his primary consideration was the actor's suitability for the character. "Shen Teng is comparatively very well suited to the role," Wen explained, noting that the actor's ability to infuse humor naturally eases some of the drama.

The film also features Jiang Qiming as restaurant manager Ma Junsheng, Omar Sherif as apprentice Seif, Aarif Lee as U.S. Army private Tony, and Sherif Sobhy as Zaid. The screenplay was co-written by Wen Muye, Lang Qunli, and Zhong Wei, with Ning Hao serving as executive producer. Wen Muye, a protégé of Tian Zhuangzhuang from the Beijing Film Academy, continues to showcase his talent for impactful, character-driven storytelling.

'Once Upon a Time in the Middle East' is set for release in North America on October 9, distributed by Well Go USA Entertainment, offering international audiences a chance to experience this unique blend of personal drama and war narrative.
