The submission of "Ben'Imana" to the 99th Academy Awards places Rwanda among a growing number of African countries making their debut in the international feature category. It is the 13th African nation in the last decade to join the Oscar race, reflecting a vibrant expansion of global cinema on the world stage. This year, Rwanda also shares the distinction of being a first-time submitter alongside Cyprus and El Salvador, highlighting the Academy's broadening reach.

"Ben'Imana" first garnered international attention at the Cannes Film Festival, where it became the first Rwandan film ever to be screened in the Official Selection. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section, the film went on to win two major accolades: the prestigious Caméra d’Or for Best First Feature and the FIPRESCI Prize, solidifying its critical acclaim.

Set in 2012, the powerful drama centers on Vénéranda, a woman dedicated to fostering dialogue and healing between survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and the families of those responsible. Her mission, however, is deeply challenged when a personal situation involving her daughter forces Vénéranda to confront whether she can truly practice the forgiveness she passionately preaches.

IndieWire's review praised the film's nuanced approach, stating, "While hope on the horizon is presented, this rich, deeply moving drama doesn’t shy away from forgiveness being something that cannot be easily forced, even when the will may be there, however far buried." The film stars Isabelle Kabano, alongside newcomers Clémentine U. Nyirinkindi and Kesia Kelly Nishimwe.

Director Marie-Clementine Dusabejambo co-wrote the screenplay with Delphine Agut. The film boasts a predominantly Rwandan crew and was shot entirely on location within Rwanda, featuring cinematography by Mostafa El Kashef and an original score by Rwandan singer-songwriter Igor Mabano. This commitment to local talent and authenticity further elevates its impact.

"Ben'Imana" will also mark the launch of the film distribution arm for Alexander, an independent storytelling company founded by producer Cameron Lamb. Audiences in the United Kingdom can look forward to its release on February 19, 2027, with a U.S. theatrical release slated for March 2027, bringing this significant work to a wider global audience.
