The Cold War-era intrigue of John le Carré's universe is set to return to television screens with 'Legacy of Spies,' an ambitious co-production between the BBC and MGM+. The series has just wrapped production in the Czech Republic, coinciding with the release of its first-look images, which prominently feature 'Succession' star Matthew Macfadyen in the distinguished glasses of George Smiley.

This marks a significant return for the character of George Smiley to television after a four-decade hiatus, following Alec Guinness's legendary portrayal. While Gary Oldman took on the role in the 2011 film adaptation of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' Macfadyen's turn is poised to reintroduce the subtle complexities of le Carré's world to a global audience.

'Legacy of Spies' draws its narrative from two of le Carré's celebrated novels: 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold' and the later 'A Legacy of Spies' (2017). The story plunges into the perilous realm of Cold War Berlin, where highly experienced Circus operative Alec Leamas, played by Charlie Hunnam, recruits a dynamic East German woman, Doris Quinz (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu), to smuggle crucial Stasi documents to the West. This dangerous mission ignites a chain of events, drawing the ruthless Stasi operatives Josef Fiedler (Daniel Brühl) and Hans-Dieter Mundt (Felix Kammerer) into a fierce pursuit, driven by their own intense rivalry. An idealistic young woman, Liz Gold (Agnes O’Casey), also becomes entangled, forcing Leamas to confront a world where loyalty is fragile and betrayal is an ever-present threat.

The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast beyond Macfadyen and Hunnam. Hugh Laurie, previously revealed by Deadline, will play Control, the commanding and morally ambiguous head of The Circus. Other key players include Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon, Jake Dunn as Peter Guillam, Anjana Vasan as Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie as Ann Smiley, and Joe Alwyn as Jim Prideaux.

Behind the scenes, the series is written by Stephen Cornwell, who also serves as showrunner, alongside Clarissa Ingram. Michael Lennox is the lead director, with Claudia Llosa as second director and co-executive producer.
