The news, initially reported by Deadline, highlights the increasing global reach and innovative potential of the Saturday Night Live format. 'The Smile Clinic,' which originated in SNL Korea's eighth season, quickly garnered a massive following for its sharp satire of Korea's booming cosmetic dermatology industry and the often-absurd office politics within it.
Its popularity wasn't confined to linear television; clips from the sketch have amassed over 17 million views on YouTube, demonstrating its significant digital footprint and proving its appeal to a broad audience. This digital success played a crucial role in the decision to greenlight the spin-off.
The new sitcom will see the return of its beloved cast members, including Lee Su-ji, Kim Won-hun, Gong Min-jeung, Kim Kyu-won, and Ji Ye-eun, ensuring continuity for fans of the original sketch. The series is a collaborative effort, with NBCUniversal Formats – which distributes the SNL brand internationally – striking the deal with Korean streamer Coupang Play. CP Entertainment is on board to produce the sitcom.
While this marks a first for an international SNL iteration, the concept of sketches evolving into standalone projects has a rich history in the U.S. version. Iconic examples include 'Wayne's World' and 'Coneheads,' which successfully transitioned to the big screen, and 'MacGruber,' which became a feature film before finding new life as a Peacock series. This Korean spin-off extends that legacy, demonstrating the adaptability and enduring appeal of character-driven comedy across cultures.
Linfield Ng, VP, Format Sales and Production at NBCUniversal Formats, emphasized the sketch's resonance, stating, "'The Smile Clinic' has been one of the most viral digital shorts in Korea, and it’s easy to see why. Office politics and K-beauty are things audiences recognise everywhere, and these characters already have a big following, so a sitcom made complete sense." Ng added that it's "brilliant to see SNL Korea create something of its own, and we’re proud to be doing it with Coupang Play and the SNL Korea team."
This development underscores the broader international momentum of the SNL format, which has seen critical acclaim for its recently launched UK version and a forthcoming French adaptation by Canal+. The success of 'The Smile Clinic' further solidifies SNL's ability to foster local talent and create globally relevant content, making this new sitcom a significant milestone for the franchise.
