The streaming giant's unprecedented week was largely fueled by a combination of factors, including the direct-to-streaming film Mayday, the highly anticipated fourth season of Ted Lasso, and a substantial post-Emmys viewership bump for acclaimed series Widow's Bay and Pluribus.
Apple TV+ dominated the 2026 Emmys, held on September 14, securing 28 wins—the most for any platform that year and a new record for the streamer. This awards success translated almost immediately into increased engagement, creating a 'halo effect' for its winning shows.
Leading the charge for new content was Mayday, the Cold War buddy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. Released on September 4, the film quickly became Apple TV+'s biggest film debut to date over its first 18 days. Third-party data from Luminate corroborated its success, showing Mayday opening at No. 1 in the U.S. rankings for September 4-10 with 8.7 million views, and holding strong at No. 2 the following week.
The Emmy effect was particularly evident for freshman horror comedy Widow's Bay. The series, which took home an astonishing 14 Emmys—the most ever for a comedy series in a single season—experienced a massive 280% week-over-week viewership increase in the post-Emmys period. This surge was global, with strong viewership across the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, India, Poland, and Spain. Luminate data further supported this, showing Widow's Bay jumping from outside the Top 50 to No. 13 in the week of September 11-17, encompassing the days immediately after its Emmy wins.

Similarly, the sci-fi drama Pluribus, another significant Emmy winner with six statuettes, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn, saw a 200% surge in viewership week-over-week. While this increase was likely off a smaller base, given the series wrapped its run in December, it highlights the power of awards recognition to reignite interest.
Even Slow Horses, which secured one Emmy, benefited from the awards buzz. The spy thriller re-entered Luminate's Top 50 at No. 43 for the week of September 11-17, after missing the cut the prior week. Furthermore, its sixth season posted a rare season-to-season viewership increase for a show so deep into its run, rising 25% over Season 5 based on its first seven days of release, maintaining its position as Apple TV+'s top UK title.

Long-running hit Ted Lasso also played a crucial role in the year-over-year gains. Its fourth season, despite some initial creative stumbles, has become the most-viewed season for a returning Apple TV+ comedy over its first 54 days. Nielsen's streaming report for the week of September 7 placed Ted Lasso at No. 7 overall, with 734 million minutes viewed.
Adding to the momentum was the iCloud+ expansion launched by Apple on September 15, which rolled out access to Apple TV+ at no additional cost for paid iCloud+ subscribers across more than 170 countries, potentially broadening the platform's audience base. This combination of critical acclaim, new flagship content, and strategic platform expansion has clearly positioned Apple TV+ for a breakout period.
