The Stargate franchise, which began with Roland Emmerich's 1994 film and expanded significantly with the hugely popular television series Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007) and its spin-offs Atlantis and Universe, has been largely dormant for over a decade. Fans have eagerly awaited its return, but efforts to revive the interstellar travel saga have often faced setbacks.

Indeed, Amazon MGM Studios has had a tumultuous journey in bringing Stargate back to the screen. A reboot was reportedly announced with much fanfare in November 2025, only to be abruptly canceled in June 2026, a move that disappointed the franchise's original creators and dedicated fanbase. However, it seems Amazon was not ready to give up on the iconic gateway to other worlds.

Now, the studio is turning to a proven talent in the realm of genre storytelling: Jac Schaeffer. Schaeffer's resume includes spearheading Marvel's critically acclaimed WandaVision, where she served as creator and head writer, and she also developed the upcoming spin-off Agatha All Along. Her involvement extends to producing the series Visionquest. Schaeffer departed Marvel at the end of 2025 and subsequently signed an exclusive three-year deal with Amazon MGM in early 2026, making her a prime candidate to breathe new life into Stargate.

While the news is certainly exciting for fans, details about the new Stargate series remain scarce. There is no official synopsis, nor has any casting information been released. It's currently unclear whether Schaeffer's vision will entail a complete reboot, wiping the slate clean of previous continuity, or if it will serve as a direct sequel, potentially building upon the rich lore established by the previous shows. The lack of concrete information places the project in its very early conceptual stages.

Despite the mystery surrounding its direction, the prospect of a new Stargate series under Schaeffer's guidance is already generating buzz. Long-time enthusiasts are undoubtedly holding out hope for the return of familiar faces. The appearance of original cast members such as Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, or Christopher Judge, even in cameo roles, would undoubtedly ignite the community and provide a strong endorsement for this highly anticipated revival.
