Fans of the iconic Stargate universe have reason to celebrate, as a new series derived from Stargate SG-1 is reportedly in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The news, initially reported by Deadline, indicates a significant push to revive the long-running sci-fi property, potentially timed to coincide with the upcoming thirtieth anniversary of the original Stargate SG-1 series, which first aired in 1997.

At the helm of this ambitious new endeavor is Jac Schaeffer, celebrated for her creative contributions to Disney+'s Marvel series. Schaeffer served as the head writer and executive producer for the critically acclaimed WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen, and is also the creator of the upcoming spin-off Agatha All Along, featuring Kathryn Hahn. Her involvement signals a potentially fresh and high-profile direction for the Stargate franchise, known for its intricate mythology and dedicated fanbase.

Details about the project remain scarce, with Amazon MGM Studios reportedly keeping a tight lid on information. However, it has been confirmed that scriptwriting is underway in New York. Joining Schaeffer on the production team are seasoned producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. The husband-and-wife duo brings a wealth of experience, having been involved in various high-profile projects.

This isn't Amazon's first attempt to expand the Stargate universe recently. The streaming giant had previously ordered another Stargate SG-1 spin-off in November 2025 for Prime Video. That project, led by Canadian screenwriter Martin Gero, who had a history with the franchise through Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, was unfortunately canceled during pre-production in June of the following year. Interestingly, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell were also attached as producers to that aborted series, suggesting a persistent effort to get a new Stargate iteration off the ground.

The Stargate franchise, which began with the 1994 feature film, spawned multiple successful television series, including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. Its enduring popularity and rich narrative potential make it a prime candidate for a modern reimagining. With Jac Schaeffer's vision and Amazon MGM's backing, this new series could mark a significant revival for one of television's most beloved science fiction sagas.
