Fans eager for a return to the post-apocalyptic world of Terminator 2: Judgment Day will find a familiar yet fresh perspective in Terminator: Survivors. As reported by Screen Rant, the game, developed by Nacon Studio Milan and published by Nacon, will center on an original survivor character, rather than the legendary Sarah Connor. This pivot offers players a unique opportunity to experience the early days of humanity's fight against Skynet from the ground up.
Set in 2009, four years after a new, inevitable Judgment Day occurred in 2005, Survivors immerses players in a world where they emerge from a shelter to establish the nascent resistance. The game's narrative acknowledges Sarah Connor's successful prevention of the original 1997 Judgment Day depicted in Terminator 2. However, Skynet's eventual self-awareness in 2005 led to the nuclear apocalypse, setting the stage for the game's timeline. Players will be tasked with uncovering the truth behind this new Judgment Day, battling early Skynet machines, and building a foothold for humanity, all while being relentlessly hunted by a T-800.
While Sarah Connor won't be the playable lead, Nacon has confirmed that the storyline remains deeply connected to her legacy and the events of Judgment Day. Familiar franchise characters are expected to appear alongside original ones, leaving the door open for potential cameos, perhaps even from Sarah herself, though her official appearance as an NPC has yet to be confirmed. This approach allows the game to expand the lore of the Terminator universe, bridging the gap between Judgment Day and the eventual rise of John Connor's organized Resistance.
Terminator: Survivors has, however, faced a challenging development cycle. Initially announced for Steam Early Access in October 2024, the game was pushed back to 2025. Further delays followed, with Nacon announcing in December 2025 that the Early Access model was being abandoned entirely. In a statement, the developer explained, "We’ve also had to overhaul our release plans, instead of launching in early access, we want your first steps into the wasteland to be a complete and polished experience. You might have guessed already, but that means Terminator: Survivors won't be launching in 2025. We don't have a new date locked in, but we'll let you know when we're ready to share a new release date."
As of October 2026, the game's release remains listed as "TBA," with Nacon Studio Milan preparing in-engine gameplay showcases and closed playtests. Despite the extended wait, fans are hopeful that Terminator: Survivors will deliver a compelling and polished experience worthy of the iconic franchise.
