The cameras are rolling for The Housemaid's Secret, with new set photos and videos confirming that Emmy-nominated actress Sydney Sweeney has returned to the world of R-rated suspense. The sequel builds on the runaway success of The Housemaid, an adaptation of Freida McFadden's bestselling novel, which became a surprise hit for director Paul Feig and Sweeney, raking in an impressive $394 million worldwide. This made it the highest-grossing film for both their careers, according to ScreenRant.
Sweeney, whose career has skyrocketed from supporting roles in series like The Handmaid's Tale and Euphoria to leading lady status, will once again portray Millie Calloway, a character known for uncovering dark secrets within seemingly perfect households. This time, Millie finds herself working for the wealthy and enigmatic Garrick family. Her suspicions are soon piqued by the behavior of Wendy, played by Kirsten Dunst, leading Millie to believe Wendy is being abused by her husband, Douglas, portrayed by Paul Anthony Kelly. Driven by a desire to protect another woman, Millie sets out to expose the truth, which promises to be even more sinister than her own past.
The first film's source material, McFadden's The Housemaid novel, was a global phenomenon, selling over 3.5 million copies and spending more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The anticipation for the cinematic follow-up is therefore significant.
Joining Sweeney, Dunst, and Kelly in The Housemaid's Secret are Michele Morrone as Enzo and Brittany Snow. There's also speculation that Amanda Seyfried, a key player in the original's success, may return. Behind the scenes, the successful creative team from the first film is largely intact. Paul Feig is back in the director's chair, while author Freida McFadden herself, alongside Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, are penning the script. Producer Todd Lieberman, who revealed to ScreenRant that "the script is excellent, and there's a lot of excitement around it," had previously indicated that writing began even before The Housemaid hit theaters.
While Feig had initially hinted at a late 2026 production start, the recent influx of set media confirms that filming is well underway. Fans won't have to wait too long to see Sweeney's return to the thrilling narrative, as The Housemaid's Secret is slated for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
