The 53rd Telluride Film Festival launched its festivities on Friday, initiating with the annual Patron Brunch, a premier gathering that united the industry's top talent with the festival's most generous benefactors. Following this exclusive event, the annual Patron Preview unveiled one of the festival's most eagerly awaited titles to a captivated audience.
Among the luminaries gracing the brunch were Andrew Scott, star of Elsinore; Jesse Eisenberg, director, and Julianne Moore, star, of The Debut; Rami Malek from The Man I Love; and John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, stars of Wild Horse Nine. Also in attendance were Danny Boyle, director, and Jack O’Connell, star, of Ink; Sandra Hüller, known for Fatherland and Rose; Ron Howard, director of Avedon; and Léa Seydoux, who remarkably stars in three festival films: Alpha Gang, Gentle Monster, and The Unknown. A significant contingent from the Club Kid team also joined, including director/star Jordan Firstman, alongside stars Cara Delevingne and Diego Calva, and scene-stealer Colleen Camp, celebrated for her own awards season gatherings.
Notably absent was legendary writer/director Mike Leigh, 83 and in fragile health, whose film Tender Loving Care is nonetheless well-represented by its principal cast (excluding Kate O’Flynn). Leigh's presence was felt through "A Film by Mike Leigh" hats distributed by Tender Loving Care distributor Bleecker Street to brunch attendees.
The festival saw a mix of familiar faces and first-timers. Danny Boyle, a Telluride veteran with past hits like Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and Steve Jobs, returned. Julianne Moore marked her return after decades, having last attended in 1994 with Vanya on 42nd Street. Surprisingly, acclaimed cinematographer Caleb Deschanel made his Telluride debut, presenting clips from the unfinished animated feature Wildwood.
Teams behind Ink and Wild Horse Nine arrived directly from Venice, where their films received rapturous receptions. Like many talents at the festival, their schedules are packed with Q&As, panels, and press engagements, leaving little time for leisure or viewing other films. Jesse Eisenberg expressed a common sentiment, lamenting the lack of opportunity to catch other top-tier movies. Andrew Scott, however, vowed to prioritize seeing as many "gay movies" as possible, highlighting La Bola Negra, Club Kid, and A Long Winter as must-sees.
"Los Javis," the acclaimed ex-partners who co-directed La Bola Negra — honored at Cannes and a primary contender for Netflix this season — were among the most celebrated figures. Speaking of Netflix, the streamer hosted a late-night listening party for its documentary The Disciple, focusing on the Wu-Tang Clan's legendary, single-copy album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, which was reportedly blasted for attendees.
The much-anticipated Patron Preview, traditionally kept secret until the audience is seated in the Werner Herzog Theatre, was revealed to be Wild Horse Nine. Fresh off its world premiere in Venice, the film is currently screening and will have another showing on Saturday night at the Palm Theatre, followed by a moderated Q&A with director McDonagh, stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, supporting actors Steve Buscemi and Mariana di Girolamo, and producer Graham Broadbent.
