For decades, Rocky V has been a sore spot for both fans and its creator, Sylvester Stallone. Intended as the grand finale for the Italian Stallion, the film instead delivered a muted box office performance and a critical reception that left much to be desired. Stallone himself has often expressed his profound dissatisfaction with the final product, particularly its truncated ending and departure from his original vision.
According to an interview with SiriusXM, as reported by Ecran Large, Stallone revealed that the film remains a personal grievance. "It's like a thorn in my soul," he admitted, highlighting the deep-seated regret he holds for Rocky V's outcome. The film, which saw the return of original Rocky director John G. Avildsen and a screenplay by Stallone, was reportedly altered significantly by producers, leading to a version that even Stallone felt betrayed his character's legacy.
This isn't the first time Stallone has sought to mend past cinematic wounds. In 2021, he successfully re-edited Rocky IV, releasing Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago – The Ultimate Director’s Cut to a generally positive reception. This experience appears to have emboldened him to tackle Rocky V, a film that grossed a franchise-low $119 million worldwide.
Stallone confirmed his direct approach to Amazon, stating, "I've discussed it with Amazon. I told them: 'Give me three weeks, please. I want to re-edit this film.'" He expressed absolute confidence in his ability to improve the movie, declaring himself "100% sure" he could enhance it. Among his key objectives is the reintroduction of Bill Conti's classic musical score, which was largely sidelined in the original cut in favor of a more contemporary soundtrack.
This move comes at a time when Stallone's involvement in the Rocky universe has been a topic of discussion, particularly after his exclusion from Creed III. Re-editing Rocky V could be seen as an opportunity for Stallone to reclaim some creative agency over the franchise he built, reminding audiences of his indelible mark on its narrative and character arcs. While a biopic, I Play Rocky, is also in the works detailing the genesis of the original film, Stallone's focus remains squarely on rectifying what he perceives as a significant misstep in his celebrated career.
Should Amazon agree to his proposal, fans might finally get to see a version of Rocky V that aligns more closely with Stallone's original intentions, potentially altering the film's standing within the beloved saga and offering a more satisfying conclusion to Balboa's initial journey.
