'The Challenger' is poised to offer a comprehensive look at the events leading up to the devastating 1986 explosion of NASA’s space shuttle, the subsequent investigation, and the trailblazing journey of Sally Ride as the first American woman in space. The series draws inspiration from Meredith E. Bagby’s book, The New Guys.
These actors join an already stellar cast that features Kristen Stewart as Sally Ride. Previous announcements revealed Will Arnett as George Abbey, the Director of Flight Crew Operations for NASA’s Space Shuttle, who assigned Ride to the 1983 STS-7 mission. Danny Huston is cast as William Rogers, who spearheaded the investigation into the Challenger explosion, with Sofia Black D’Elia as Judy Resnik, the fourth woman in space and a Challenger crew member. Paul Sparks will play Larry Mulloy, NASA SRB project manager, while Boris McGiver takes on the role of William ‘Bill’ Lucas, a NASA official implicated in the disaster. Shea Whigham is set to portray Roger Boisjoly, a mechanical engineer who voiced strong opposition to the launch.
The ensemble also includes William Fichtner as Nobel physicist Richard Feynman, with Kevin Carroll as his colleague, Professor Arthur Walker. Eric Lange plays Gen. Donald Kutyna of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. Adelaide Clemens is cast as NASA astronaut Rhea Seddon, Louisa Jacobson as Tam O’Shaughnessy, Sally Ride’s partner, and Hunter Burke as astronaut Steve Hawley.
Maggie Cohn, known for her work on 'The Staircase,' created the series and serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The limited series is a collaborative effort from Big Swing Productions, Amblin Television, and Nevermind Pictures. Executive producers include Kyra Sedgwick and Valerie Stadler for Big Swing Productions, Meredith E. Bagby, Kristen Stewart, Dylan Meyer, and Maggie McLean for Nevermind Pictures, and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television.
