The upcoming Amazon series, The Challenger, is taking shape with a significant influx of new talent joining its cast. The project, which has been in development for nearly a decade, will delve into the compelling story of the Challenger space shuttle and the groundbreaking class of astronauts it carried, led by the iconic Sally Ride.
Kristen Stewart was previously announced to take on the lead role of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Now, according to a report by Ecran Large, the production has welcomed a new wave of performers set to portray key figures in this dramatic historical narrative.
Among the new additions are William Fichtner, known for his roles in Lucky and Prison Break, who will portray Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Kevin Carroll (The Leftovers) joins him as fellow professor Arthur Walker. Eric Lange (Narcos) steps into the shoes of General Donald Kutyna, a crucial member of the Rogers Commission that investigated the 1986 Challenger disaster. Adelaide Clemens (R.J. Decker) will don a NASA flight suit as astronaut and physician Rhea Seddon.
The series also casts Louisa Jacobson (The Gilded Age) as Tam O’Shaughnessy, Sally Ride's partner, and Hunter Burke (Sweet Magnolias) as cosmonaut Steve Hawley, Ride's first husband. These actors will help bring to life the personal and professional journeys surrounding this pivotal era in space exploration.
They join an already robust cast that includes Will Arnett as George Abbey, the formidable director of NASA flight operations; Danny Huston as William Rogers, head of the investigative commission; Sofia Black-D’Elia as astronaut Judy Resnik, who perished in the crash; Paul Sparks as booster project manager Larry Mulloy; Boris McGiver as William "Bill" Lucas, director of the Marshall Space Flight Center; and Shea Whigham as Roger Boisjoly, the whistleblower engineer.
The Challenger is based on Meredith E. Bagby's book The New Guys: The Astronauts That Changed the Face of Space Travel. Maggie Cohn, celebrated for her work on The Staircase and American Crime Story, serves as showrunner, ensuring a nuanced and compelling narrative. Behind the camera, James Hawes, acclaimed for directing One Life and Slow Horses, is set to helm the series.
The project, spearheaded by producers Kyra Sedgwick and Valerie Stadler through their Big Swing banner since 2017, finally gained momentum with the backing of Amblin and Amazon MGM Studios. While the cast and crew are coming together, Prime Video has yet to announce a launch date for this highly anticipated series.
