After Trap, his less-than-stellar thriller about a serial killer and doting dad played by Josh Hartnett, M. Night Shyamalan will soon return to theaters with Remain, titled Reste avec moi in French, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton). For this project, the director has ventured into romance, a genre he had only previously touched upon. The release date, initially set for late last October, has been pushed back to early February 2027, perfectly timed for Valentine's Day.

However: Remain will be a romance, yes, but à la Shyamalan, meaning with a fantastic, even horrific, backdrop, judging by the elegant yet somewhat unsettling trailer released by Warner.

“I see dead people” – a return to form? While Remain's trailer initially sells us the sweet flirtations of a couple, or two people on the verge of becoming one, the atmosphere radically shifts halfway through. The promised love story takes a nightmarish turn (with added screeching music), and Wren’s existence is seriously called into question.

Especially since Tate, the character played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is described as a solitary and introverted architect who, upon meeting Wren, is drawn into a dark secret that 'haunts' the small coastal town where he intended to start anew, according to the official synopsis. Furthermore, the story adapts the eponymous novel that Shyamalan co-wrote with author Nicholas Sparks (known for romance novels like The Notebook and Dear John).

Ghost, horror version

The rest of the cast includes Tracy Ifeachor (The Pitt), Julie Hagerty (Airplane!), Jay O. Sanders (The Day After, Kiss the Girls), Maria Dizzia (The Staircase), and likely Shyamalan himself, who is expected to continue his tradition of cameos. In any case, the trailer suggests that Remain will lean towards the quality of The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, or The Village, rather than The Happening, After Earth, Glass, or Old.

The film is set to be released in French cinemas on February 3, 2027.
