The year 2026 has been quite the year for the Spider-Man franchise. On the big screen, the blockbuster film Spider-Man: Brand New Day has continued its impressive run, raking in an astounding $2.45 billion at the global box office. Meanwhile, Amazon's streaming platform had delivered the excellent series Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage.

The series resonated with audiences, accumulating 2.6 billion minutes viewed within its first six weeks, according to Nielsen, and garnered an impressive 11 Emmy Award nominations – a record for Prime Video this year. Yet, despite this success, Amazon made the surprising decision to cancel Spider-Noir, a move Nicolas Cage reportedly took with philosophical calm.

However, the streaming behemoth clearly has no intention of abandoning the lucrative Spider-Man IP. Sources indicate that Amazon is already preparing its next moves, with plans for one, or even two, new spin-off series.

Always More Spider-Man

The exact scope of this new offensive remains somewhat nebulous. According to revelations from the American media outlet The Ankler, Amazon and Sony have already commissioned and received four independent scripts, each from very different creative talents. This suggests that the two companies are still exploring various directions for their next projects. Here are the writers reportedly involved:

  • Alison Tatlock: A writer and producer known for her work on Better Call Saul and Pluribus.
  • Kelvin Yu: Creator and showrunner of the series American Born Chinese, and a writer for Bob's Burgers.
  • Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert: Creators of For All Mankind, who are collaborating on this project with Megan McDonnell (WandaVision, The Marvels).
  • Ben H. Winters: Producer and creator of Tracker.

While no definitive green light has been given, the platform is reportedly seriously considering moving forward with one or two of these projects. However, a degree of caution is warranted, as the television saga between Sony and Amazon concerning the Spider-Man license has seen its share of twists and turns. It's worth remembering that prior to Spider-Noir, Prime Video had shelved the Silk: Spider Society project after years of deliberation and rewrites.

Another significant challenge lies in identifying the lead characters. Due to Sony's existing contract with Marvel, which reserves Peter Parker for cinema, Prime Video is compelled to delve deeper into the Marvel mythos to find its heroes. While options abound (Spider-Man 2099, Scarlet Spider, Spider-Woman, Spider-Punk – who will appear in cinemas – or even the symbiotic Venom and Carnage), it's uncertain whether all of them will resonate equally with the general public. For now, these potential new Spidey series have no announced release dates.
