A true interactive slasher upon its 2015 PS4 launch, Until Dawn (featuring Rami Malek and the late Hayden Panettiere in its cast) propelled the British studio Supermassive Games into the spotlight. Since then, the studio, perhaps a bit overzealous, has relentlessly milked its interactive film formula with multiple choices, churning out uneven chapters of The Dark Pictures anthology and the enjoyable but repetitive The Quarry.

Despite selling four million copies worldwide, the original game has suffered some indignities in recent years, including a lazy PS5 remake in 2024 and a frankly disastrous film adaptation titled Until Dawn: La Mort sans fin. Teased discreetly during the June 2026 State of Play, Until Dawn 2 is finally materializing with a proper trailer and a firm release date, exclusively for PS5.

Until Dawn 2, an Exclusive on PS5

Moving away from the blizzards and abandoned mines of Blackwood Pines, this new installment (which will not be a direct sequel to the first Until Dawn) follows "Dead True," a group of content creators specializing in paranormal hoaxes. Recently signed by a major American TV network to fund a pilot for a potential TV series, the crew arrives on a deserted tropical atoll where, predictably, the shoot quickly descends into a bloodbath.

Until Dawn 2 isn't expected to shake up the established formula, as the "Butterfly Effect" gameplay system will return. Every moral choice, every line of dialogue, and the evolving relationships between characters will branch the progression into dozens of pathways, always adhering to the saga's golden rule: any protagonist can meet a gruesome end or see the light of day depending on your decisions.

On the development front, Supermassive Games has been sidelined, with Firesprite (Horizon Call of the Mountain) now in charge. But the real surprise comes from Firesprite's collaboration with AdHoc Studio, the team founded by veterans from Telltale Games' golden age and lauded for the critical and commercial triumph of Dispatch, the superhero narrative game in the vein of Invincible. AdHoc Studio has taken on the script, promising a level of writing far superior to the usual standards (we're very optimistic).

To bring this new batch of digital cannon fodder to life, Sony has assembled an impressive cast:

  • Sarah Catherine Hook (The White Lotus): Izzy;
  • Gia Kim (XO, Kitty): Yoona;
  • Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things): Owen;
  • Spence Moore II (Creed 3): Nate;
  • Gavin Leatherwood (Jeu Intérieur);
  • Tanner Buchanan (Cobra Kai);
  • Neil Newbon (Astarion in Baldur’s Gate III);
  • Peter Stormare: returning in the role of Dr. Alan J. Hill.

Until Dawn 2 is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027.
