The live-action journey of Dungeons & Dragons has been a roll of the dice, often landing on misfortune. After the infamous 2000 film Dungeons & Dragons, a cinematic misfire, and two subsequent low-budget sequels, the franchise seemed to finally hit a critical sweet spot with 2023's charming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Unfortunately, even critical acclaim couldn't save it from a disappointing box office performance, leaving the future of the cinematic D&D universe uncertain.

However, Hasbro isn't giving up on its fantasy cash cow. The adventure now shifts to the small screen. While a previous D&D series project with Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello was in the works, Netflix has opted for a fresh start. The reins have been handed to screenwriter John August (Big Fish) and acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón, who will serve as a producer. This new iteration promises a stark departure from lighthearted antics, instead plunging viewers into the morbid depths of the legendary Ravenloft setting.

Dungeons & Dragons & Bloodthirsty Vampires

At first glance, associating D&D with horror might seem counterintuitive. Yet, the vast Dungeons & Dragons universe extends far beyond fire-breathing beasts and axe-wielding dwarves. A significant portion of its lore is steeped in tormented dark fantasy, particularly within the Ravenloft campaign setting. Introduced in 1983, Ravenloft aimed to infuse a more mature tone into the tabletop role-playing game, drawing inspiration less from Tolkien and more from Victorian literature and Hammer horror classics.

The Netflix Ravenloft series is envisioned as a sprawling, dark epic that weaves together sorcery, supernatural intrigue, and a toxic romantic tragedy. The narrative will chronicle the downfall of Strahd von Zarovich, a legendary D&D figure. His tragic tale sees him transform from a noble warrior into a tormented soul who pacts with occult powers, ultimately becoming an undead tyrant – a vampire lord.

While no cast members have been announced to don the vampire's cape, this announcement comes at an opportune moment for the streaming giant. With The Witcher preparing its final bow after its fifth season, leaving a considerable fantasy void, a Ravenloft-branded series could very well step in to captivate fans of monsters and fresh blood.

The Dungeons & Dragons franchise is also expanding into the video game realm. Hasbro recently unveiled the open-world RPG Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons at Gamescom 2026. This title is already generating significant buzz, not only for its The Witcher-esque dark fantasy premise but also for its stellar voice cast, which includes Tricia Helfer (Number Six in Battlestar Galactica) and Maggie Robertson (Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village) in lead roles. Warlock is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
