What happens inside the stomach of a whale when you've accidentally been swallowed? A small survival kit is delivered in the unsettling new trailer for Englouti.

Since the release of its first trailer last June, followed by a second in August, genre film enthusiasts and our team at Popcorn Wire have been firmly on the edge of their seats awaiting the release of Englouti. Directed by Brian Duffield (Hunted), who co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, this action-horror thriller will notably take place largely within the belly of a sperm whale.

The premise follows the hero, portrayed by Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Dash & Lily, Resident Evil), a diver with the misfortune of being accidentally swallowed by a giant of the seas, much like Jonah, who will try everything to escape Moby Dick's gut.

The cast also includes Josh Brolin (currently starring in Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars) and Elizabeth Shue (The Karate Kid, Back to the Future Part II and III, Mysterious Skin, The Boys), who play the parents of the deep-sea explorer on the verge of being digested. To further whet our appetite, so to speak, a new trailer has just arrived, revealing much more.

Englouti: Already Making Waves

Assuming Jay, the hero, survives inside the sperm whale's stomach long enough to fill a feature film's runtime, many questions arise about the concept of Englouti. This new trailer answers some of them (whereas the previous one focused more on the father-son relationship). It seems, indeed, that a large part of the film fully embraces its high-concept survival aspect and takes place entirely inside the whale.

It's less spacious than Monstro's belly in Pinocchio, and spectators' claustrophobia is likely to be severely tested. But how will said spectators see anything? Cetacean stomachs do not yet, in 2026, benefit from public lighting (and that's a scandal). The trailer answers this too: by an enormous stroke of luck, the hero is swallowed at the same time as a bioluminescent jellyfish that can serve as his nightlight.

But that's not all: he also seems to find a giant squid beak (an organ not digested by sperm whales when they gobble up cephalopods) which can serve as a knife. All this is very cool, but it doesn't change the fact that the diver only has 59 minutes of air before asphyxiating, and it seems the giant squid he was swallowed with is also still very much alive...

One question remains: sperm whales are cetaceans known to dive to depths of over 2000 meters and remain on the surface for only a very short time before returning to hunt in the abysses. It's no surprise, then, that the trailer shows Jay suffering from intense ear pain.

Rather than finding a way to extract himself from the whale at any moment, risking immense pressure and thus imploding like a millionaire in a small carbon fiber submersible, he will have to judiciously calculate his exit. This is undoubtedly why he is seen trying to escape through the whale's blowhole when it surfaces to breathe, even if the operation seems to fail... We mostly sympathize with the sperm whale for the atrocious tickle it must feel in its nostril.

In short, Jay will have to escape more than just gastric fluids in this story, and this new trailer significantly ramps up our anticipation. Plus, at the end, a very quick shot of an orca appears, which already earns bonus points. **See Englouti in theaters starting October 14.**
