Both Belo-Osagie and Reiter made their initial foray into the SNL universe during an early sketch titled "The Debut: Dream Academy." This segment parodied reality competition shows, specifically one designed to find the next breakout girl group. Saidah Belo-Osagie portrayed Neelsa Boyce, a 17-year-old aspiring pop star whose past credits included playing Young Nala in The Lion King on Broadway. Her role was concise, establishing her character within the chaotic competition.
Grace Reiter, however, received more substantial screen time and was central to some of the sketch's most peculiar moments. She embodied Margle, an eccentric contestant who famously "only wear[s] flip flops because I keep passing out when I try to tie my shoes." Margle's unique contributions included showing up fully nude to a dance choreography session and later, during a songwriting exercise, pitching "Moose Knuckle" as a band name and the line "Newton's Cradle, come and get it." It was also revealed that Margle, along with another contestant, was coerced into participating after witnessing an executive commit a hit-and-run. The sketch culminated with Margle performing the new single "Newton’s Cradle" alongside the musical guest for the premiere, Katseye, who was framed as the Season 1 winner of The Debut.
Reiter's presence extended beyond this initial sketch, as she made a second appearance in the night's final segment. In this sketch, she played Tonya, an immigrant with a dream, who becomes entangled with host Jalen Brunson (of the New York Knicks) and Kenan Thompson’s character. Thompson portrayed Coach Dennis, Brunson’s third-grade basketball coach with a "really bad drinking problem," now seeking a loan and hoping to rope Tonya into his Spider-Man-themed porno screenplay. The sketch ended with the trio stealing jerseys from the locker room.
Historically, Saturday Night Live often utilizes its "Weekend Update" segment to help new talent find their footing and showcase their individual voices. However, the Season 52 premiere opted for special panelists during this segment, leaving Belo-Osagie and Reiter to shine solely within the main sketches.
