Rosalind Franklin, a British biophysicist and X-ray crystallographer, tragically passed away at just 37 years old in 1958. Despite her untimely death, her meticulous research, particularly her famous 'Photograph 51,' provided critical evidence that underpinned James Watson and Francis Crick's model of DNA. For decades, her contributions were largely overlooked or downplayed, leading to a historical injustice that recent scholarship and popular culture have sought to correct. In 2023, scientists formally acknowledged her as an equal partner in the epoch-making discovery of DNA.

The upcoming series aims to delve deeper into Franklin's narrative, offering a more comprehensive look at her life beyond the scientific achievements. Jessica Franklin, her great-niece, expressed the profound personal connection and responsibility she feels for the project, stating that bringing her great-aunt’s story to life is "the greatest challenge and the greatest honour of my life." This intimate perspective promises a nuanced portrayal of the scientist.

Directing the series is Valerie Weiss, known for her work on popular shows like Outer Banks. Weiss brings a personal admiration for Franklin to the project, revealing that Rosalind Franklin has "been my hero since I first studied biology." Jessica Franklin echoed this sentiment, asserting that Weiss "is the ideal person to finally give Rosalind’s story and character the justice that history has denied her." Both Weiss and Jessica Franklin will serve as executive producers alongside Eugin Koh.

Secret of Life is being produced by Elizabeth Bay Productions, the independent studio behind films such as Terrence Malick's A Hidden Life. Casting for the series is underway, led by Shakyra Dowling, who previously cast Nicole Kidman in the stage play Photograph 51, an earlier adaptation of Franklin's story. WestEnd Films is handling international sales for the series at MIPCOM Cannes.

This television series is distinct from the upcoming Tom Hooper-directed film adaptation of Anna Ziegler's play Photograph 51, which is set to star Natalie Portman. While the film will focus on the specific period surrounding the DNA discovery, Secret of Life is expected to offer a broader, more expansive exploration of Rosalind Franklin's entire life and career, ensuring that her legacy is fully recognized and celebrated on the small screen.
