Fans of epic historical sagas have reason to rejoice as the Vikings franchise expands with a new spin-off, Bloodaxe, on Prime Video. As reported by Allociné, the series, which serves as a spiritual successor rather than a direct continuation, has already secured a second season order even before its premiere, alongside the release of its inaugural images.
The original Vikings series captivated audiences from 2013 to 2020, establishing itself as a historical drama rivaling the likes of Game of Thrones. Its legacy continued with the Netflix spin-off Vikings: Valhalla, which ran from 2022 to 2024. Now, Bloodaxe promises to delve deeper into the brutal and ambitious world of Norse legend and history.
Developed by Michael Hirst, the acclaimed showrunner of the original Vikings, alongside his son Oratio, Bloodaxe will focus on the legendary figure Erik Bloodaxe, one of the most notorious Viking raiders, and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, famously known as the 'Mother of Kings.' The series will chronicle their intense struggle for the Norwegian throne, a land torn by fierce rivalries, shifting alliances, and bloody betrayals, drawing in ruthless kings from other Scandinavian nations and even a powerful English sovereign.
Hirst expressed his vision for the new series, stating, "I intend to open your eyes to new incredible characters and incredible stories, all of which prove true and many of which changed the course of history." This commitment to historically inspired, yet dramatized, storytelling remains a hallmark of the franchise.
The recently released first images offer a compelling glimpse into the series' aesthetic and action. Xavier Molyneux, portraying Erik Bloodaxe, is seen in full warrior regalia, his face adorned with tribal paint amidst a battle scene filmed in the misty Northern lands. The visuals suggest a continuation of the gritty, authentic feel that Vikings fans have come to expect.
Jessica Madsen makes her first appearance as Gunnhild, the Mother of Kings, in the released stills. Notably, she is depicted both pregnant and wielding a sword, hinting at the fierce and complex nature of her character. This portrayal underscores the powerful roles women often held in Viking society, both in domestic life and on the battlefield.

The early renewal for a second season speaks volumes about Prime Video's confidence in Bloodaxe. With a compelling premise, a returning creative force, and a visually promising first look, Bloodaxe is poised to be the next must-watch historical drama for fans of the Vikings universe.
