The summer of 2020 saw France tentatively emerging from its initial lockdown, with cinemas reopening their doors to a cautious public. It was into this fraught environment that Warner Bros. launched 'Tenet' in August. The film, known for its intricate, time-bending narrative, took on the formidable task of reigniting the theatrical experience.
Directed by Nolan, a filmmaker celebrated for his complex storytelling in hits like 'Inception' and 'Interstellar', 'Tenet' followed the Protagonist, portrayed by John David Washington, as he embarked on a mission to prevent a Russian oligarch (Kenneth Branagh) from a future-communicating plot to destroy the world. The star-studded cast also included Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Himesh Patel, and Michael Caine, adding significant draw to the high-concept production.
Despite its challenging premise and the ongoing pandemic, 'Tenet' successfully captivated French audiences, securing 2,349,310 admissions. This impressive tally placed it firmly at the top of the 2020 French box office. It outpaced other strong contenders, including Sam Mendes' war epic '1917', which garnered over 2.2 million viewers, and Jeff Fowler's family-friendly 'Sonic the Hedgehog', which attracted 2.1 million. French comedy-drama 'Adieu les cons' (Bye Bye Morons), directed by Albert Dupontel, also performed exceptionally well with 2 million admissions and a remarkable seven César Awards. Rounding out the top five was 'Bad Boys for Life', directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with 1.7 million tickets sold.
While 'Tenet's' performance was a significant triumph for the struggling cinema industry in 2020, its overall standing within Christopher Nolan's illustrious filmography in France places it at eighth. The film's 2.3 million admissions, while strong for its release year, are surpassed by several of Nolan's other blockbusters. His most recent epic, 'Oppenheimer', currently leads the pack with an astounding nearly 8 million admissions in France, making it his highest-grossing film there. Following 'Oppenheimer' are 'Inception' with 4.9 million admissions, 'The Dark Knight Rises' with 4.4 million, and 'The Dark Knight' with 3 million. 'Interstellar' and 'Dunkirk' also rank higher than 'Tenet', holding sixth and seventh place respectively with 2.6 million and 2.5 million admissions. Nevertheless, 'Tenet' remains a testament to Nolan's draw and the resilience of cinema, proving that even in the most challenging times, a compelling cinematic experience can bring people back to the big screen.
