The Newport Beach Film Festival is set to honor one of Hollywood's most distinctive voices, Aaron Sorkin, with its esteemed Maverick Award. Known for his sharp dialogue and compelling narratives across film and television, Sorkin's recognition will be a highlight of the festival, which runs from October 15-22.

The tribute event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 11 a.m. on the Mainstage at Fashion Island. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to witness a live recording of The Hollywood Reporter's popular 'Awards Chatter' podcast, where Sorkin will delve into his extensive career. The award presentation will immediately follow the conversation. Tickets for this special event are free, though an RSVP is required.

Gregg Schwenk, CEO and executive director of the Newport Beach Film Festival, lauded Sorkin's impact on the industry. "Aaron Sorkin is one of the defining voices of our time, a writer whose razor-sharp dialogue and fearless storytelling have shaped how we watch film and television," Schwenk stated. He added, "From A Few Good Men and The West Wing to The Social Network and Molly’s Game, his work has consistently challenged audiences and raised the bar for the craft. We are honored to celebrate his singular career with the Maverick Award."

Sorkin, 65, first gained widespread acclaim with his play and subsequent screenplay, A Few Good Men. His early screenwriting credits also include Malice and The American President. He then made a significant mark on television with critically acclaimed series such as Sports Night and the iconic political drama The West Wing, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. His small-screen work continued with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Newsroom.

On the film front, Sorkin's screenplays include Charlie Wilson's War, Moneyball, and Steve Jobs. He earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network and Golden Globes for both The Social Network and Steve Jobs. In recent years, Sorkin has transitioned into directing his own scripts, helming films like Molly's Game, the Oscar-nominated The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos. His latest project, The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to The Social Network exploring the detrimental effects of Facebook, is set for release this Friday, starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong.

The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast, celebrating its 11th anniversary and nearing its 700th episode, has a history of hosting industry luminaries. This live event with Sorkin underscores the festival's commitment to offering insightful programming alongside its film screenings.
