The first glimpse into the world of 'Hirayasumi' comes courtesy of Viz Media and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro), who released the new material, as reported by Variety. While international streaming plans are still under wraps, the initial reveal offers a compelling look at what's to come from Production +h., the studio behind 'The Orbital Children' and 'Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction.'
The teaser trailer introduces viewers to Hiroto, a laid-back 29-year-old part-timer navigating his daily routine in Tokyo’s Asagaya neighborhood. It highlights his endearing relationship with an elderly neighbor he affectionately calls Granny, and foreshadows the arrival of his cousin, Natsumi, who moves to the capital to pursue art studies.
The accompanying key visual further expands on this world, featuring Hiroto and Natsumi in front of the quaint, one-story Asagaya house Hiroto inherited from Granny. They are joined by Hideki, Hiroto’s closest friend; Akari, Natsumi’s university peer; and Yomogi, a local real estate agent, suggesting a rich ensemble cast.
Leading the voice cast is Uchida Yuma, known for his roles as Fushiguro Megumi in 'Jujutsu Kaisen' and Ash Lynx in 'Banana Fish.' Uchida lends his voice to Hiroto, capturing the protagonist’s easygoing nature. “'Hirayasumi' is a wonderful work where human drama unfolds amidst the ordinary moments of everyday life,” Uchida stated, expressing his desire to embody Hiroto's "unpretentious personality and easygoing vibe."
Joining him is Takahashi Mayu, who portrays 18-year-old Kobayashi Natsumi. Natsumi, a reserved newcomer from Yamagata with secret aspirations of becoming a manga artist, often finds herself clashing with her more relaxed cousin. Takahashi, a talent discovered through the Kimi Koe Project, shared her deep connection to the character, saying, “I’m truly delighted to be involved in this wonderful work that I love so much.”
Veteran voice actress Aikawa Rikako, recognized for roles like Squirtle in the 'Pokémon' franchise, takes on the role of Wada Hanae, the 83-year-old Granny. Aikawa beautifully encapsulates the series' emotional depth, noting, “'Hirayasumi' brings not so much a flutter in the heart, but a catch in the chest, followed by a slow, tender swell of emotion.”
The creative team bringing 'Hirayasumi' to life includes Suezawa Kei ('Fate/Grand Order: Camelot – Wandering; Agateram') as director, series composer, and scriptwriter. Asano Naoyuki ('Urusei Yatsura') is designing the characters, with Nishimura Mika ('Typhoon Noruda') as art director and Sawada Kaori ('What Did You Eat Yesterday?') composing the music.
The original 'Hirayasumi' manga by Shinzo Keigo began its serialization in Shogakukan’s 'Weekly Big Comic Spirits' in 2021. It has since grown to 10 volumes, selling over 1.7 million copies worldwide, and has garnered accolades such as best serial comic at Lucca Comics & Games 2024 and the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award. Shinzo’s personal experience recovering from lymphoma during the COVID-19 pandemic served as an inspiration for the series, adding a layer of poignant authenticity to its themes of finding peace in the everyday. Shinzo's other works, including 'Moriyamachu Driving School' and 'Tokyo Alien Bros.,' have also received live-action adaptations.
