Known for his critically acclaimed work, including the Venice Golden Lion winner 'Before the Rain,' Manchevski's new film promises a unique narrative. 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover' delves into the lives of Malina and Viktor, a resourceful sister and brother navigating the fringes of Macedonian society. Their survival strategy involves illicitly acquiring bronze busts and manhole covers, a venture they undertake with a distinct, defiant flair.
The duo's chaotic journey leads them to an encounter with a wealthy, blind elderly woman. This interaction, characterized by her complex mix of sternness and compassion, prompts Malina and Viktor to confront their own moral compass and the true meaning of devotion.
Manchevski, who both wrote and directed the film, shared insights into his creative vision. He stated that his "anti-heroes defiantly refuse to identify as victims," highlighting the resilience at the heart of the characters. He also noted his interest in exploring "a story of great love and unconditional acceptance that is not erotic," suggesting a nuanced portrayal of familial bonds.
The cast features Sara Klimoska and Filip Trajkovikj in the lead roles, supported by Sonja Mihajlova. Jane Kortoshev serves as the producer for the film. International sales for 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover' are being handled by Francesca Breccia's Coccinelle Film Sales, which plans to introduce the title to buyers at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market.
This premiere marks a return to the Tokyo International Film Festival for Manchevski, whose previous film, 'Kaymak,' also made its world premiere in the festival's competition. His illustrious career includes 'Dust,' which opened the Venice Film Festival, as well as 'Mothers' and 'Willow.' 'Before the Rain' not only secured the Golden Lion and Fipresci Prize but also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, cementing Manchevski's status as a significant voice in international cinema.
