As originally reported by Variety, the selection of 'Behemoth!' marks a significant moment for the Southern California festival, which runs from October 15-22. Tony Gilroy, known for his work on the 'Bourne' franchise and 'Michael Clayton,' brings a deeply personal story to the screen, focusing on the demanding world of music.
Pedro Pascal takes on the lead role of Alex Serian, a gifted cellist whose life takes an unexpected turn upon his return to Los Angeles. After two decades of performing globally, Serian embarks on a 'life-changing adventure,' suggesting a narrative rich with emotional depth and personal discovery. The film's unique auditory landscape is further enhanced by the contributions of nine different composers, promising a diverse and immersive musical experience.
Gregg Schwenk, CEO and Executive Director of the Newport Beach Film Festival, expressed enthusiasm for the choice. "We couldn’t have picked a better way to celebrate 27 years of Newport than closing with a filmmaker as exciting as Tony Gilroy," Schwenk stated, emphasizing the film's resonance. "This film has a deeply personal story about what music demands of the people who live inside it — and having Tony and Jade here in person for Q&A is exactly the kind of up-close experience that makes Newport unlike any other festival in the country."
The festival, recognized as the largest international cinema event in coastal Southern California, typically draws over 50,000 attendees, offering a vibrant platform for a diverse range of films. This year's lineup also includes titles such as 'A Talent for Murder,' 'Ink,' and 'Jimmy,' a biopic on screen legend Jimmy Stewart. Last year's festival concluded with Guillermo Del Toro's 'Frankenstein,' featuring a star-studded cast.
Following its festival premiere, 'Behemoth!' is slated for a wider release on December 4, offering audiences beyond Newport Beach the chance to experience Gilroy's latest work and Pascal's performance.
