In a piece published by EcranLarge, it was revealed that Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, confirmed to Collider that Mason Thames has been cast as Dick Grayson, the iconic first Robin. Thames, known for his breakout role in The Black Phone and set to star in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, will lend his voice to the character in the upcoming animated feature, Dynamic Duo.
Safran expressed high praise for Thames' dedication to the role, stating, "We always say we want volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He wanted it so badly. He came in, crushed the audition, and was awesome. He’s a wonderful young actor, but man, did he want that role. He was literally obsessed. When he came into our offices with his father, he wanted to take pictures of everything and with all our formidable archives. He’s a true fan."
Dynamic Duo promises a unique take on the origins of two prominent Robins: Dick Grayson and Jason Todd (who later becomes Red Hood). The film's narrative will reportedly follow the two young delinquents in the grimy underbelly of Gotham City, chronicling a tragic event that ultimately steers Grayson towards Batman and Todd towards the formidable Red Hood gang. This animated project was first teased at the Annecy Animation Festival, generating considerable buzz for its distinctive approach.
The film is being developed by the visionary studio Swaybox, utilizing a "unique blend of animation, puppetry, and CGI." DC co-CEO James Gunn has also lauded the project's innovative style, noting, "It’s the very first feature film from the visionary Swaybox studio, a unique blend of animation, puppetry, and CGI, on a script from the talented Matt Aldrich and produced with our partners at 6th & Idaho, Matt Reeves’ company. It’s a truly special project."
While the broader DCU has faced a somewhat tumultuous period, with critical successes like Lanterns juxtaposed against box office disappointments like Supergirl and several series cancellations, the casting of Thames for Dynamic Duo signals clear progress for the Batman mythos within the new cinematic framework.
Speculation is already rife regarding whether Thames might reprise the role of Dick Grayson in live-action, particularly in The Brave and The Bold, the upcoming Batman film intended to be part of the main DCU timeline alongside Superman and Supergirl. While an official confirmation for a live-action role remains elusive, sources suggest Dynamic Duo itself will be canon within the primary DCU. Fans will need to exercise patience, however, as Dynamic Duo is currently slated for a theatrical release on September 22, 2028, in US cinemas, with hopes for a wider international release.
