During a recent interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt following a Marvel TV panel at New York Comic-Con, Brad Winderbaum confirmed the future of Marvel Zombies. The acclaimed animated series, known for its gruesome take on the MCU, will be presented as three distinct Disney+ Specials, each set to debut annually over the next three years. The lineup includes Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier in 2027, followed by Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu in 2028, and concluding with Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian in 2029.
Winderbaum, who expressed particular excitement for The Winter Soldier as the most developed of the projects, teased that these new installments will push the boundaries set by the original series. "It’s scary, and it’s brutal, and it’s everything you’d want from a zombie show," he told Collider. This commitment to a darker tone aligns with the first Marvel Zombies outing, which notably earned a TV-MA rating, a rarity for Marvel animation.
Beyond the visceral horror, Winderbaum also highlighted an unexpected emotional core. He compared the upcoming specials, particularly The Winter Soldier, to the critically lauded Doctor Strange episode from What If...?, praising director Bryan Andrews' work. Winderbaum described the new special as "so emotionally driven and so beautiful that you forget you’re watching a zombie show at times." This suggests that while the brutality will remain, the narrative will also delve into profound character moments, echoing the poignant tragedy explored in the What If...? installment where Doctor Strange grappled with immense loss.
The shift to a special format allows Marvel Zombies to deliver focused, high-impact stories that can further explore the ravaged corners of its universe while maintaining the mature themes and intense action that fans have come to expect. With Bryan Andrews, a key creative force behind the original series and the Doctor Strange What If...? episode, involved, the future of Marvel Zombies appears to be in capable hands, ready to deliver a unique blend of horror and heartfelt storytelling.
