News first reported by Deadline reveals that the upcoming special will feature a stellar British cast. Martin Freeman, known for his roles in The Hobbit and Sherlock, and Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent, celebrated for The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Bridget Jones, are set to star. They will be joined by Adrian Scarborough (The Chelsea Detective), Joe Armstrong (Happy Valley), India Fowler (The Agency), and Lewis Shepherd (Dear England).

'The Bride's Chamber' is a lesser-known, yet profoundly dark, story by Charles Dickens, originally published in 1858. The narrative, also set in 1858, follows a jilted and vengeful suitor who schemes to manipulate and marry a young woman to seize her fortune. However, his sinister plot ultimately condemns him to a purgatory of his own making.

This annual Christmas ghost story has become a beloved tradition on the BBC, with this year's installment marking the ninth special crafted by writer and director Mark Gatiss. Gatiss, co-creator of Sherlock, has previously brought adaptations of E.F. Benson’s The Room in the Tower and E. Nesbit’s Woman of Stone to festive screens. The production of 'The Bride's Chamber' also reunites Gatiss with Martin Freeman, who played Dr. John Watson opposite Gatiss's Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock. Gatiss and Broadbent have also shared screen time in London Spy and Game of Thrones, though not in shared scenes.

Principal photography for 'The Bride's Chamber' took place earlier this year at Ingatestone Hall in Essex, UK. Adorable Media is producing the special, with BBC Studios handling its international distribution. Isibeal Ballance serves as producer for Adorable, and Mark Bell is the BBC commissioning editor. The special is slated to air on BBC Two and will be available on BBC iPlayer during the festive period.

Gatiss expressed his excitement about unearthing such a unique tale, stating, "It’s unusual to find a Dickens rarity, but this is it. A weird and nasty little treasure which lurks within a work co-written with the great Wilkie Collins. A lonely inn, an incognito traveller and a ghastly tale of warped obsession. Merry Christmas!"

Beyond 'The Bride's Chamber,' the BBC's winter schedule will feature a broader array of Dickens-themed programming. This includes a three-part documentary exploring how the iconic British writer drew inspiration from the streets of Victorian London, as well as a new adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities starring Kit Harington.
