Since its debut, Lanterns has made a significant splash on HBO Max, reigniting interest in the beloved DC Comics heroes fifteen years after their last major live-action outing. The series, created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, follows seasoned Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they unravel a mysterious murder investigation. Its dark, True Detective-esque atmosphere resonated with audiences, reportedly attracting up to 9.3 million views and nearly 19 million global viewers per episode, according to TheWrap. On AlloCiné, it holds a respectable 3.7 out of 5 from viewers.

However, despite this strong performance, a second season has yet to be officially greenlit. This has left fans eager for more and wondering about the fate of the series. Speaking to Collider, Peter Safran, who co-chairs DC Studios alongside James Gunn, confirmed that a writing team is actively developing potential storylines for a follow-up season. Yet, the renewal is not a foregone conclusion.

Safran emphasized that the creative bar for a second season is exceptionally high. "If we are able to imagine what we consider to be a worthy successor to a first season that was so successful and appreciated, that is what will determine the production of a second season," he stated. The executive also expressed satisfaction with how the series has successfully rehabilitated the Green Lantern brand in popular culture, particularly after the mixed reception of the 2011 film.

Reassuring fans, Safran also told IGN that TV series remain "an essential element of our overall programming," providing the necessary space for complex storytelling that feature films often cannot. He reiterated his cautious optimism for Lanterns, noting, "If, as HBO, DC, Chris Mundy, and the whole team believe, we succeed in creating a worthy sequel to this much-loved first season, then I wouldn't be surprised to see more."

While the fate of the series hangs in the balance, the future for one of its lead characters, John Stewart, is already set. Actor Aaron Pierre is confirmed to reprise his role as John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated sequel to James Gunn's Superman. The destiny of Hal Jordan, however, remains more ambiguous following the events of the Lanterns season finale, with Safran declining to confirm his ultimate fate.

Fans can expect a decision on Lanterns' second season before the end of 2026, as per Safran's comments to Collider. In the meantime, all eight episodes of the acclaimed first season are available for streaming on HBO Max.
