Following the conclusion of the flagship series Yellowstone, creator Taylor Sheridan has successfully launched several new ventures to continue the neo-Western saga. Among these is Marshals, a crime procedural airing on CBS that sees Luke Grimes reprise his role as Kayce Dutton, transitioning from ranch life to an elite unit of U.S. Marshals.

Fans have naturally speculated about the possibility of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III making an appearance in the new series, despite his character's on-screen death in Yellowstone. The complex departure of Costner from the original show, stemming from a reported falling out with Sheridan, left a significant void, and his character's influence still looms large over the Dutton family's narrative.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Grimes addressed these persistent rumors. He revealed that he has not spoken with Costner since their time working together on Yellowstone concluded. "Never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together," Grimes clarified, attributing the lack of contact to their busy schedules. While acknowledging that seeing Costner back would be "cool," Grimes expressed significant doubt about it happening. "I doubt that will happen at this point," he stated.

Grimes further elaborated on his perspective, suggesting that a flashback involving Kayce's wife, Monica, would hold more narrative weight for his character's journey in Marshals. "I think if there was a flashback, I'd probably rather it be with Monica than John," he noted, believing it would be "more poignant to the character."

Currently, Marshals is focused on carving out its own identity distinct from its predecessor. The series, which has already been renewed for a second season, is performing well with audiences. This success means there's no immediate pressure for the show to incorporate major Yellowstone characters like John Dutton III or Monica, as it continues to build its own dedicated fanbase.
