The new Lonesome Dove series will bring McMurtry's beloved story to a new generation of viewers, envisioned as an ongoing saga. It centers on the legendary Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, two former Texas Rangers who rekindle their adventurous spirit for one last, perilous cattle drive from the Rio Grande to the untamed wilderness of Montana. Their journey is a sweeping odyssey through the American West, exploring themes of unrequited longing, unbreakable friendship, brutal frontier justice, and the relentless pursuit of a meaningful life.

Independent studio Teton Ridge Entertainment, known for its focus on American West narratives, acquired the rights to the Lonesome Dove literary franchise earlier this year. They subsequently brought in Kazan and Stuart to pen the adaptation, with the package quickly landing at Netflix after a competitive bidding situation in early May. The four-month gap before the official confirmation was reportedly due to the intricate process of securing all necessary rights.

Kazan and Stuart are no strangers to adapting literary giants for Netflix. They previously served as co-showrunners on the streamer's upcoming East of Eden limited series, based on John Steinbeck's novel, which was written by Kazan and stars Florence Pugh, set to premiere on October 1.

Executive producers for the series include Kazan, Stuart, Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, and Jen Gorton for Teton Ridge Entertainment, alongside Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana (McMurtry's longtime creative partner), and Curtis McMurtry of the McMurtry Estate.

McMurtry's novel, published in 1986, was a colossal success, spending weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and selling over 4 million copies. Its enduring popularity led to a highly acclaimed 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, which garnered a Peabody Award, seven Emmys, and two Golden Globes, drawing approximately 26 million viewers. Subsequent books in the Lonesome Dove series also saw miniseries adaptations.
