The documentary, which recently premiered for a limited theatrical run, delves into Lisa's decision to step away from Blackpink for a year, a pact she made with bandmates Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé to pursue individual interests. What began as a potential travel break quickly transformed into a period of intense creative output and personal growth. During this time, Lisa released her debut full-length album, Alter Ego, made her acting debut in HBO's The White Lotus, and secured a coveted solo performance slot at Coachella.

Director Sue Kim emphasized her intention to craft a film that transcended the typical K-pop narrative. "I knew from the get go that I was operating under different instructions, that I was going to be able to work with a beloved K-pop idol away from the K-pop system," Kim told The Hollywood Reporter. This approach allowed for a more honest and vulnerable portrayal of Lisa, showcasing her family and friends from Thailand – aspects rarely seen through the filtered lens of the K-pop industry.

Despite logistical challenges, including an inability to license Blackpink's music and trainee-era footage from Lisa's previous label, the documentary succeeds in presenting a more personal side of the star. One of the film's most candid moments sees Lisa addressing a past controversy involving leaked trainee videos containing offensive language. Previously silent on the matter due to label suggestions and even death threats, Lisa uses the documentary to offer a heartfelt apology. Kim clarified that this moment was unscripted and organic, capturing Lisa's genuine distress and regret as the news broke.

The film also explores Lisa's personal aspirations, including her desire for marriage and children, and her hope that fans will understand her as "just a girl" with universal dreams. As the year-long break concludes, the documentary captures Lisa's nervous anticipation about returning to Blackpink, but also her renewed energy. "We miss each other so much, and we’re like, ‘OK, we’re locked in. We’re back, guys,'" she shared, reflecting on how the break empowered the group.

Since reuniting for their Deadline EP and subsequent world tour, Lisa has continued her solo trajectory with new music like her single “SaWaDiKa” and the upcoming EP Press Play, slated for an October 23 release. She's also gearing up for a Las Vegas residency. Watching her journey unfold in Always Lalisa has solidified Lisa's self-belief. "Truly that’s real me," she says of her portrayal, adding, "I’m just so proud of myself."
