As the awards season begins to heat up, Netflix is bringing one of its anticipated contenders, Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love,' to select theaters this weekend before its streaming premiere. The film, which garnered significant buzz at the Venice International Film Festival, marks another compelling entry from the South Korean master filmmaker.

'Possible Love' masterfully navigates the intricate landscape of socioeconomic disparity, using the backdrop of a documentary's production to connect two vastly different families. The narrative centers on Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon), who lives a quiet life with her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their young son. Their world shifts when a funeral introduces them to Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), an affluent documentary filmmaker, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung). As Mi-ok agrees to be filmed, she finds herself drawn into the orbit of Ye-ji and, more unsettlingly, to the enigmatic Sang-woo. This collision of worlds gradually exposes underlying desires and begins to fracture their seemingly stable existences.

The film is said to be loosely inspired by a segment from Krzysztof Kieślowski’s revered 'Dekalog' series, though Lee Chang-dong takes the foundational idea in deeply personal and original directions. Critics have lauded Lee's signature storytelling, which, while subtler than previous works like 'Burning,' maintains its devastating emotional power.

IndieWire's David Ehrlich hailed the film as a "masterpiece," observing that Lee possesses "his gift for whipping spectacle out of thin air — for infusing something as routine as a car ride home or a quick dip in the ocean with an overwhelming degree of silent pathos." Ehrlich further noted the film's sharp examination of societal friction, stating that "Every moment in ‘Possible Love’ crackles like a wicked symphony of striated socioeconomic abrasion; every gesture, comment, and detail sharpens the strange geometry that brings these people closer together at the same time as it deepens the divides that will ultimately keep them apart."

'Possible Love' will first be available in select theaters starting Friday, October 23, offering audiences an early opportunity to experience Lee Chang-dong's latest work. It will then become available for streaming on Netflix globally beginning November 6, positioning it as a strong contender for critical acclaim and awards recognition in the coming months.
