Popcorn Wire has learned from a Deadline exclusive that 'Vigilant' is shaping up to be a significant European co-production, with Icelandic outfit ACT4 leading the charge alongside German broadcaster ZDF and its distribution arm, ZDF Studios. Icelandic telecommunications company Siminn is also on board, securing local rights for the drama, which ZDF Studios will distribute internationally.

The six-part series is set to begin production in Iceland on October 29, the very landscape where the story unfolds. The narrative centers on a female journalist who finds herself drawn into the world of a self-proclaimed vigilante. This mysterious figure is waging a violent campaign against sexual predators, and while the reporter initially views him as a champion for the voiceless, she soon begins to uncover a more unsettling truth.

As her investigative reporting ignites a national debate, 'Vigilant' promises to delve into complex moral questions, particularly whether violence can ever be justified when the established justice system fails. This timely exploration of societal dilemmas is a core aspect that captivated the creative team.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, beyond his acting prowess in shows like 'Severance,' has taken on the crucial role of adapting Sigurðsson's impactful novel for television. He is joined by an impressive Icelandic writing team, including Víkingur Kristjánsson, Anita Briem, Teitur Magnússon, and Anna Gunndís Guðmundsdóttir, ensuring a rich, authentic voice for the project.

Ólafsson expressed his deep connection to the source material, stating, "Skúli’s novel had a profound impact on me when I first read it. Beneath the thriller, I found a story asking difficult questions about justice, anger and what happens when people lose faith in the systems meant to protect them." He added his excitement to see Skogland bring the world to life with her vision.

Kari Skogland's impressive resume includes directing episodes of critically acclaimed and popular series such as 'The Handmaid's Tale,' 'The Walking Dead,' and 'Vikings,' making her a formidable choice to steer this ambitious project. Skogland will also serve as an executive producer for the series.

Skogland herself was immediately drawn to the script. "'Vigilant' captivated me from the first page," she remarked, highlighting how the characters' moral ambiguities challenge the audience's own perceptions. "Everyone’s damage is exposed at some point, their fragility and strength are tested in this fantastic landscape for thought-provoking performance opportunities, all while wrapped in a nail-biting thriller."

Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, Director of Drama at ZDF Studios, underscored the series' broad appeal, noting that 'Vigilant' combines Iceland’s distinctive storytelling tradition with universal themes that will resonate with audiences worldwide. This sentiment was echoed by Katharina Kremling, Commissioning Editor at ZDF, who expressed pride in the international collaboration bringing this distinctive project to German audiences.
