Netflix and AMC are joining forces to bring Bannerman to the small screen, and they've secured a major talent in Jeff Daniels. The Emmy-winning actor, known for his versatile performances in everything from The Newsroom to Godless, will take on the role of Raymond Lesko, a character central to the intricate spy narrative.

The series draws its inspiration from John R. Maxim's acclaimed spy novels, which were published between 1989 and 2003. While the lead character, Paul Bannerman, is yet to be cast, Daniels' involvement as Lesko provides a strong anchor for the ensemble.

Raymond Lesko's backstory is a compelling one: a once-renowned NYPD detective, he was disgraced and expelled from the force after seeking revenge for the murder of his partner. Now working as hotel security, Lesko's quiet, haunted existence is disrupted when his daughter becomes involved with a dangerous individual, forcing him back into a world he tried to leave behind.

Bannerman is being spearheaded by Craig Silverstein, who will serve as showrunner and co-writer. Silverstein's previous credits include Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Turn. He's joined by acclaimed filmmaker Shane Black, known for his sharp writing and direction in films like The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Black is set to co-write the pilot episode and direct the first two installments, setting the tone for the series.

The broader plot of Bannerman revolves around Paul Bannerman, a formidable secret agent who attempts to convince a group of the world's most dangerous assassins to abandon their clandestine lives and settle down in suburban Connecticut. However, their hopes for a normal existence are quickly shattered by old enemies, lingering bad habits, a paranoid government, and persistent law enforcement figures – including, presumably, Daniels' Raymond Lesko. Their retirement, it seems, will prove to be their most challenging mission yet.

The casting of Daniels comes at a busy time for Netflix's series division, even as its film arm undergoes internal restructuring. The streamer recently made waves by acquiring A24's thriller The Apology, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, with a two-season order. For Daniels himself, Bannerman adds to an already packed schedule; he is slated to appear in the fifth and final season of Apple TV+'s The Morning Show and the Netflix film 2034, an AI thriller directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

With six novels in Maxim's series, Bannerman has the potential for a multi-season run, allowing for a deep exploration of its complex characters and sprawling espionage world. While a global release date for Bannerman has not yet been announced, anticipation is building for what promises to be a sophisticated and thrilling addition to the spy genre on streaming.
