The highly anticipated drama, co-written by Lee and Oh Jung-mi (who also collaborated on 'Burning'), captivated audiences on Sunday evening. 'Possible Love' delves into the intricate lives of two married couples whose paths unexpectedly intertwine. The narrative centers on Mi-ok (Jeon Do-Yeon), who shares a quiet life with her husband, Ho-Seok (Sul Kyung-gu), and their young son, Cheol. Their world is shaken after Ho-seok is laid off from his job following a significant incident that has left him struggling to connect with his family.

The true nature of Ho-seok's past incident comes to light after the family encounters Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker focused on the lives of laid-off workers, and her ultra-wealthy husband, Sang-woo (Zo In-sung). As Mi-ok agrees to be filmed for Ye-ji's project, a deepening connection forms between the two women, creating an uncomfortable tension that profoundly impacts both households.

Speaking ahead of the Venice premiere, Director Lee revealed that the film's inspiration stemmed from a period of mass layoffs at a major Korean conglomerate years ago. "At the time, I remember thinking it would be a transformative event in the Korean labor market," Lee explained. "I also knew it probably meant the beginning of a normalization of such restructuring of conglomerates that would greatly change the lives of these laborers."

Lee initially hesitated to pursue the project, questioning his suitability to tell such a story. "I started to ask myself: Am I worthy of telling a story like this? I mean, do I have the right? Documentaries had already been filmed about the subject," he recounted. "Could I really justify turning this into a dramatic film? I couldn’t get a clear answer to that question, so I shelved the project."

Despite his initial reservations, 'Possible Love' has garnered significant recognition. The Korean Film Council has already selected the title as Korea’s official Oscar entry for the Best International Feature category. Netflix, which financed the film and holds its international rights, has confirmed an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release in Korea, the U.S., and other select territories. This release will follow its prestigious showings at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals.

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast, co-produced by Anonymous Content, Korea’s NOWFILM, and Pinehouse Film. Jeon Do-yeon, a previous collaborator with Director Lee on 'Secret Sunshine', and Sul Kyung-gu, who starred in Lee’s 'Peppermint Candy', lead the cast alongside Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.
