The upcoming series, 'Night Tales Club,' will bring together a formidable roster of directorial talent to adapt the chilling short stories of author Sawamura Ichi. As reported by Variety, the project features celebrated filmmakers Kiyoshi Kurosawa, known for his psychological thrillers like 'Cure' and 'Wife of a Spy,' and Takashi Shimizu, the mastermind behind the iconic 'Ju-on' (The Grudge) franchise and 'The Inugami Family.'
Each of the six episodes will delve into a different terrifying narrative, with Kurosawa and Shimizu each helming one installment. They are joined by a compelling lineup of directors, including Katayama Shinzo ('Gannibal'), Sode Yukiko ('Aristocrats'), Sakashita Yuichiro ('I Can’t Cry With Your Face'), and Nakamura Yosuke ('Higuma!!'). The overarching narrative segments, which tie the anthology together, will be directed by Nakajima Kenji, whose credits include 'The Naked Director.'
At the heart of 'Night Tales Club' is the enigmatic businessman Hojo, portrayed by acclaimed actor Yamada Takayuki. Hojo is obsessed with the paranormal, viewing ghosts, curses, and other supernatural occurrences not as mere folklore, but as 'bugs' – glitches in reality that hint at a deeper, hidden conspiracy. To uncover the truth, he establishes the 'Night Tales Club,' offering a substantial reward of JPY20 million (approximately $126,000 USD) in gold to anyone who can present a verifiable, firsthand account of a supernatural encounter, complete with proof. The six terrifying accounts shared at his club form the backbone of the series.
The series draws directly from Sawamura Ichi's collection of short horror stories, with the author himself adapting his material for the screen. Sawamura expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "As the original author of these stories, I feel an enormous sense of surprise and joy that they will soon be available on screen to scare audiences around the world."
'Night Tales Club' is produced by Wakabayashi Yusuke and Yamamoto Teruhisa. Its arrival signifies Disney+'s continued investment in Japanese original content, building on a growing library that already includes the intense thriller 'Gannibal,' the fantastical mystery 'Land of Tanabata,' and lighter fare such as the romantic comedy 'Merry Berry Love' and the variety show 'The One Shot.' With a premiere set for 2027, the series promises a significant addition to the global streaming landscape for horror aficionados.
