Returning to Panem decades before Katniss Everdeen's iconic turn, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping necessitates recasting several familiar faces. Among them is Beetee Latier, the brilliant District 3 victor, now played by Kelvin Harrison Jr., who follows in the footsteps of Jeffrey Wright from Catching Fire and the Mockingjay films. This transition offered Harrison Jr. a unique opportunity, especially given his prior acquaintance with Wright.
While attending the Toronto International Film Festival, Harrison Jr. spoke with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff about taking on the role. He admitted to initial nerves about sharing the news with Wright, an actor he deeply admired and with whom he had accumulated several professional connections.
"I was so scared to tell him because I think he feels like I'm stalking him at this point, because I think we have like four projects now that we were kind of connected to," Harrison Jr. recounted. "But I eventually did text him and I was like, ‘Hey, by the way, I'm going to do The Hunger Games. I'm playing Beetee.’ And he was just like, ‘That's amazing.’ He was really happy for me, but in his very Jeffrey way, so it was cool."
This conversation proved invaluable for Harrison Jr., who particularly focused on the sense of curiosity Wright imbued in Beetee – a genuine passion for analysis and discovery. However, Sunrise on the Reaping catches Beetee at a much earlier stage in his life, allowing Harrison Jr. to explore a different facet of the character before the trauma that defines his later years. As Harrison Jr. playfully put it:
"I think he has this wonderment and this real love for just thinking and discovery and analytics, and I think my version is just a little bit like he's cooler. [Laughs] Beetee, when we meet him, has been through a lot and I think we get to see him at a different point. If you've read the books you kind of know."
Based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel, Sunrise on the Reaping plunges into the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, where the number of tributes is doubled. Joseph Zada leads the ensemble as a young Haymitch Abernathy, alongside a star-studded cast including Mckenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Elle Fanning, Jesse Plemons, Maya Hawke, Ralph Fiennes, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, and Lili Taylor.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is slated to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
