For years, film and TV aficionados have relied on JustWatch to cut through the confusion of myriad streaming services, pinpointing exactly where their desired movies and shows are available, whether via subscription, free-to-watch, or rental. The platform has been a crucial tool in an era where licensing deals constantly shift content between platforms.
Now, as reported by Indiewire, JustWatch is leveraging its deep understanding of content availability to offer a direct solution. Starting next month, JustWatch TV will roll out across the U.S., Canada, the UK & Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. The service will be seamlessly integrated into the existing JustWatch website and mobile applications, eliminating the need for users to jump to another app once they've found their content.
JustWatch TV will offer a versatile viewing model, encompassing Transactional Video On Demand (TVOD) for rentals, Advertising-Video On Demand (AVOD) for ad-supported free viewing, and Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) for an ad-free experience. This multi-tiered approach provides flexibility for consumers while addressing various content licensing possibilities.
The initiative is particularly good news for independent and smaller distributors. Initial content partners include notable names like Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street, and Vortex Media. Unlike larger studios or distributors such as A24 or Neon, smaller entities often lack comprehensive streaming output deals to house their films post-theatrical release. JustWatch TV offers a vital new avenue for these titles to reach audiences, potentially streamlining acquisitions at film markets like the TIFF Market, where this news was first announced.
This move echoes recent efforts by other platforms, such as Letterboxd's Video Store, which also aims to curate and offer smaller, often hard-to-find titles for rental. However, JustWatch TV distinguishes itself by partnering directly with a broad array of distributors and offering multiple viewing options beyond just rentals. While the exact number of titles available at launch remains undisclosed, the breadth of partnerships suggests a substantial catalog.
David Croyé, Founder and CEO of the JustWatch Group, explained the evolution, stating, "With the launch of JustWatch TV, we aim to make content discovery, access and engagement even easier." Quentin Carbonell, JustWatch’s SVP of Global Content Acquisitions and Strategy, further elaborated on the service's timely arrival: "JustWatch TV is designed to meet that demand head-on, offering a straightforward solution at a time of fragmentation."
By transforming from a discovery tool into a comprehensive viewing hub, JustWatch is poised to offer a more unified and accessible experience for streaming audiences worldwide, tackling one of the biggest pain points in modern entertainment consumption.
