Veteran actor Jeff Daniels, known for his roles in The Newsroom and Dumb and Dumber, will lead the ensemble cast of The Reception. This marks director Trudie Styler's fifth feature film.

Pre-production is currently underway, with principal photography scheduled to commence next month. The picturesque setting for the wedding chaos will be a historic castle located near the legendary Loch Ness, just outside Inverness in Scotland. Additional high-end cast members are being finalized.

The Reception unfolds at a grand Scottish estate where a wedding reception proceeds despite the unexpected absence of the bride and groom. The synopsis reveals that "Felix has abandoned Victoria at the altar, leaving their parents, family and friends to navigate a lavish but increasingly chaotic reception." What begins as a desperate attempt to maintain appearances quickly devolves into "a day of calamity, hilarity, and unexpected connections, as the in-laws, staff, and guests confront their own relationships amidst the fallout."

Trudie Styler is directing and producing the feature through Maven Screen Media, alongside her business partner Celine Rattray, whose recent projects include Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. Piers Tempest of Tempo Productions, known for The Wife, also serves as a producer.

Beta Cinema is handling international sales for The Reception at the current TIFF market, while CAA Media Finance is managing North American rights.

Daniels, a five-time Golden Globe nominee, has a busy slate with upcoming films 2034 and Starman. Styler's latest directorial effort, Up Against It, is also premiering at TIFF this week. Her previous directing credits include the documentary The Sweatbox, Freak Show, which received three nominations at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, and Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples, which won Italy's Globo d’Oro for best documentary in 2024.
