Michael Mann is not typically known for directing cinematic sequels. However, if there was one film he would return to, it would undoubtedly be Heat, his cult classic heist film starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, which grossed $187.4 million worldwide against a $60 million budget upon its release in late 1995. The term 'sequel' isn't entirely precise, as Heat 2, adapted from the book co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner, functions as both a sequel and a prequel to the 1995 original.

First announced in 2022, Heat 2 has yet to commence filming, largely due to production hurdles that saw the project shift from Warner Bros. to Amazon MGM Studios. However, the film now appears to be firmly on track, with casting revelations coming in steadily. Following recent announcements regarding Odessa Young and María Cid, a previously rumored actor has now been officially confirmed.

According to Variety, Stephen Graham will star in Heat 2. While Graham's name has been linked to the project before, his involvement is now official. Industry whispers suggest he is set to portray a younger Neil McCauley, the character famously played by Robert De Niro in the first film. Graham, known for his roles in Adolescence and This Is England, would thus join a prestigious lineup.

In addition to Young and Cid, Stephen Graham would potentially join an already impressive ensemble rumored to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Adam Driver. It's important to note that these actors are at various stages of negotiation, and it's not impossible for changes to occur in Hollywood. However, for DiCaprio and Bale, their participation seems almost certain, as we recently reported.

Speculation is rife regarding their potential roles: Leonardo DiCaprio as Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer's character in Heat), Christian Bale as Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino's character in the original), and Adam Driver as a new antagonist named Wardell. Jason Clarke is also rumored for an undisclosed role. More details are expected soon, as filming is anticipated to begin by the end of 2026.

Finally, Michael Mann's legacy is enjoying a resurgence in the mid-2020s, with Joseph Kosinski (F1, Top Gun: Maverick) currently developing Miami Vice '85, based on the 1980s series produced by the director of Collateral. That project is slated for release on May 17, 2028. No release date has yet been set for Heat 2.
