Production is now officially underway for the "Joséphine Baker" biopic, directed by Maïmouna Doucouré. StudioCanal confirmed the start of filming, promising an in-depth look at the incredible life of the unparalleled Josephine Baker.

The film will chronicle Baker's extraordinary journey, from her ascent to international stardom in 1920s Paris to her courageous involvement in the French Resistance and her pivotal role in the American Civil Rights Movement. It aims to reveal the brave, complex, and remarkable woman behind the legendary persona.

As previously announced, the titular role is taken on by FKA twigs, a renowned multidisciplinary artist celebrated as a singer-songwriter, producer, dancer, choreographer, actress, and fashion visionary. Her previous acting credits include "Honey Boy" (2019) and the upcoming reboot of "The Crow," where she stars alongside Bill Skarsgård.

Call My Agent! Star Joins the Cast

The full supporting cast, which had remained under wraps, has now been revealed. Joining FKA twigs are Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giuseppe Maggio, Gregory Montel (known for "Call My Agent!"), Benjamin Millepied, Feodor Atkine, Alex Lutz, and Harmony Riley.

Written and directed by Maïmouna Doucouré, with Olivier Lorelle co-writing, the film delves into Baker's early life. Born into a childhood marked by racial segregation and hardship, a young Josephine Baker leaves 1920s America to find artistic freedom in the vibrant Paris of the Roaring Twenties. There, she quickly became one of the biggest stars of her era on both stage and screen.

The narrative will also cover her return to the United States in 1951, where, as a celebrated figure and World War II heroine, Josephine confronts the stark contradictions of her fame and the injustices she had once fled.

Filming is scheduled to continue until November 13, taking place across various locations in France, including Paris and Dordogne, as well as in Sofia, Bulgaria. A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
