The cinematic Harry Potter saga, which began with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 25 years ago, has amassed nearly $7.9 billion at the global box office across eight films, a figure that swells to $9.8 billion with the Fantastic Beasts spin-offs (not adjusted for inflation). This immense success, alongside lucrative merchandise sales, has significantly enriched creator J.K. Rowling.

Fifteen years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the franchise is set to return to the small screen with a new HBO Max series. Warner Bros. and the streamer are sparing no expense, with a reported production budget of $300 million per season. This lavish investment surpasses the per-season costs of Stranger Things Season 4 ($270 million for nine episodes) and Marvel's Secret Invasion ($210 million for six episodes).

While the first season's episodes, starring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, have yet to air, Season 2 is already in active preparation and continues to build its ensemble. It was recently announced that the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has found its actor for Tom Riddle, the younger incarnation of the formidable villain Voldemort.

Billy Barratt, known for his roles in Kraven the Hunter, the series Invasion, and notably the intense horror film Substitution – Bring Her Back, will take on the iconic role. In the 2002 film adaptation, Christian Coulson portrayed Tom Riddle, later appearing in projects such as Love is Strange, Nashville, Mozart in the Jungle, and The Beauty. The actor who will embody the adult Voldemort has not yet been revealed, though his appearance is anticipated towards the end of Season 1.

Additionally, British actor and presenter Lenny Rush is joining the Season 2 cast. The acclaimed performer, who has been seen in A Woman of Substance and Season 1 of the third Doctor Who series, will portray the beloved and poignant house-elf, Dobby.

Finally, the role of Ginny Weasley has also been recast for Season 2. Bonnie Hill, whose credits include Messagères de guerre and Girl Troop versus Aliens, will step into the role, replacing Gracie Cochrane, who departed the series after Season 1 due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

In another notable casting update, Nicholas Hoult (Superman 2025), previously announced as Gilderoy Lockhart, will no longer be part of Harry Potter Season 2. As reported last week, Kit Harington, widely recognized as Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, will now assume the role of Gilderoy Lockhart.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max starting December 25th.
