However, as all things must end (except perhaps for the MCU, seemingly…), the DCEU, largely spearheaded by Zack Snyder, has been supplanted by James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU (which includes the Superman of 2025 and Supergirl). This comprehensive reboot led to a separation between the Justice League actors and their costumed characters. Was it a painful or peaceful end? Gal Gadot recently spoke out about this passing of the torch within DC Studios.
Awaiting Gadot
Interviewed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gal Gadot was asked about her feelings regarding how the transition between the DCEU and the DCU was managed. According to her, she wished the new people in charge had been more direct with her. She had been led to believe that her love story with Wonder Woman was not yet over:
"No, they told me the opposite. They said: 'We're going to develop it with you, the third one...' But I saw how the others were treated... [...] The situation concerning Henry [Cavill] was not handled with much elegance, to say the least. The same goes for Patty [Jenkins, the director of the Wonder Woman films]; it wasn't handled elegantly. But hey, we're all adults and everything's fine. Ultimately, it's not even about people. They are there to defend what they believe in, and everything is for the best."
Regarding Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot refers to the communication misstep surrounding his potential return as Superman. After his cameo in Black Adam, the actor had announced (likely because he was instructed to) that he would return in the blue and red suit, only to learn less than two months later that his character would be completely rebooted (with David Corenswet in the role). Concerning Patty Jenkins, she had already written a screenplay for a third Wonder Woman film when she was informed that this work was now moot, as it no longer fit into the general direction of the new DCU. The actress concluded by expressing her happiness at having embodied the superhero and wishing her successor (still unknown to date) to "enjoy the ride."
